Digital nomads are known to be self-starters, hardworking professionals, and experience seekers, but even with all of that drive, it is still difficult for us to achieve our dreams if we don’t set actionable goals.

Having a set list of goals is like creating a roadmap to success. It helps us to truly get to where we want to be.

So, if you’re currently just flying through the digital nomad lifestyle by the seat of your pants, with no proper self direction — follow our guide for the ultimate goal setting strategy and make them achievable!

Goal Setting for the Digital Nomad

Make a rough draft list

To begin the goal setting process, it is important to start by creating a draft of possible goals that you can set for yourself. Brain dump all of the things that you want to accomplish throughout the year, by diving as deep as you can into the back of your mind. Think about the things that you said you were going to do 6 months ago, but that you haven’t gotten around to — write that down.
This isn’t going to be a formal list, so it’s okay if it’s all over the place. You will be making a final list very soon.

Break it down

Take the brain dump list that you just made, and break it down into a few smaller categories. Create a couple main sections that fit your lifestyle and brand — categories such as: Business, Finances, Personal, and Education.

Set SMART Goals

In order to start setting goals that will motivate you into success, it is important to start creating SMART goals. Setting SMART goals will become the foundation for our objectives and will provide us with sustainable milestones.

So, what are SMART goals?

SMART is an acronym used to break down goals. It stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. Each word is used to specify your goals and find all objectives.

Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? Try to narrow down your goals so they are very specific. Having open ended goals can be much harder to manage.

Measurable: Identify how you will know when you will reach your goal. What kind of change will you hear, see, or feel that will help you to recognize what you have accomplished it?

Attainable: Weigh all aspects of your goals, making sure that they are something that you will actually be able to achieve.

Relevant: Determine if your goals are actually relevant to your life. Do they benefit you personally or professionally? If not, take a second glance at your list of goals and eliminate the ones that won’t help you.

Timely: Set timely goals and follow a schedule! In order to fully accomplish your goals it is important to stay on track, and dedicate time to accomplishing them.

Identify obstacles

Before you begin working towards your goals, make sure to evaluate any obstacles you might face. This will prepare you for any changes and will leave you ready to face them when the time comes! If you start identifying your obstacles now, there is no reason for you to be caught off guard when you get to that point.

Do Something everyday to reach your goals

Start taking action, today! We need to do something everyday, even if it is small, in order to reach our goals. Start with the foundations of each goal and build them up until you can finally cross it off your to-do list!

Celebrate your accomplishments

Of course, it’s important to celebrate your accomplishments! Take a minute, or a day after you finish each goal to do something that you enjoy. Take a break, relax at the beach, or go out for drinks with your friends — celebrate everything that you have accomplished!
